The Art of Singing Program
Combining the traditional style of vocal instruction with music, poetry and visual arts.

Classes will focus on vocal technique: practicing, vocalizing and breathing.
Technique will be transferred from vocalizes to songs emphasizing vocal health, beauty of tone and effective musical interpretation. Song anthology will be a mixture of folk songs, songs from movies and musical theatre, art songs, as well as contemporary styles of music and student work.

Musical interpretation instruction will be based on The Performance Cycle, an instructional model developed by The Arts Literacy Project through the Education Department at Brown University in accordance with research clearly demonstrating the strong casual link between arts-learning and academic performance.

The Performance Cycle provides teachers and artists with the framework for engaging students in a process of deep comprehension by building a classroom community of learners that centers on a text.

Classes will also include basic music theory, and group yoga/breathing techniques.
Students will be encouraged to write their own lyrics and stories.

After one year of instruction, students will plan, and star in their own solo show right here in the performance space at Second Stage Studio.

Planned performances 2008-2009 (September thru June):

Who's A Villain?
Based on the novel Wicked by Gregory Maguire, with music from the Wizard of Oz, The Wiz, and Wicked.

Earth Sounds
Inspired by the movie; August Rush. We will explore, study, and listen to earth sounds. We will discuss the following statements: "Music is God's way of letting us know that there is some else besides us in the universe" and "The music is all around us. All you have to do is listen." We will listen to and discuss the Pale Blue Dot statement by Carl Sagan. We will listen to music by jazz great John Coltrane, the sound track from August Rush, In the Key of Earth, a odyssey in sound to align with the rhythms of earth, Earth Drum, and Sounds of the City. We will then combine our musical talents and imagination to create a performance for the ages.

The Secret World of Fairies
Together we will explore the Realm of the Never Fairies based upon the Disney book The Secret World of Pixie Hollow and with loads of fairy facts create our own fairy personalities and present a musical and poetic presentation in a special woodland place of our own.

An American Girl Tea
Students will select an American Girl Historic Doll and together we will research, write and perform a musical about the life of that American Girl during the Tea.
